The Four Central Baptist Covenants
1. The Membership Covenant: A commitment to Christ and the church. Romans 12:4-5 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. 2. The Maturity Covenant: A commitment to the disciplines necessary for spiritual growth. 1 Timothy 4:7 But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. Hebrews 12:1 Wherefore, seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us. 2 Peter 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever. Amen.
3. The Ministry Covenant: A commitment to discovering my God-given gifts and abilities in serving Christ and others.1 Corinthians 12:5-7, 27 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal…Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. 1 Peter 4:10 As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 4. The Missions Covenant: A Commitment to share the Good News with others.
Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear. Why do we have these covenants? We become what we are committed to.
